modes of speech

~

when passing professor eliot in a hallway

as one does

or does not    but in this case does   we may pause

to spend a few happy moments in conversation

in which   invariably

he imparts something of worth   and off i go cheerily

contemplating the nature of caesura   or something of its sisterhood

and when marketa speaks   she does so linearly

from beginning to end   little circumvention   few tangents   with humor

i am left to consider myriad points  and regardless of points   smiling

when hazim   who is my landlord   catches me

on the landing   with three bags of groceries in my arms

i am left some time later   often considerably later

neither wiser   nor happier   nor sated in any manner   merely older

I really like this one. Very strong in style and effect. Something too about "the impression" that is made - enough to provoke you to pick up a pen and write about it only to create another impression with the rhythm of words. There is also something about elevating the everyday to something impressionable through the act of noticing ... which interests me.

I love this. So many things to think about. A true poem and you a true poet.

This is a fun poem, breezy, pleasantly episodic. Also, quite gracefully written.

I'm with Ashe on this one. The final line just reiterates that time is passing and has passed, such is difference. Enjoyed.

I find this as your poems often do to make us think. The title is important: Modes of Speech. First you meet Professor Eliot who: " invariably
he imparts something of worth and off i go cheerily

contemplating the nature of caesura or something of its sisterhood"

Here I am contemplating the nature of caesura as well, when suddenly marketa shows up with her linear language, and my mind shifts to that. The way of a very intelligent person who has something to say. Unlike professor Eliot who is just as intelligent, hers is a different manner of speaking. Not like a professor, who is extracting thoughts from your mind. She seems to be placing thoughts in your mind.

Then, the poignant ending where I am guessing you spent a very long time in useless conversation, leaving the mind without thought or sated.

I could have it all wrong, but that is what I see, and I enjoyed it.

i think you are intending something difficult here, it's not the first time..somehow, in the instant.
