The recent release of a new film about the legend of King Arthur shows that the story has not lost its power to be retold. This is my contribution to the Arthurian tradition.

The charm of chess

Princess Morgan Le Fey
Played chess one day
With magical Merlin:
He was wizened white,
She was black as sin.

Merlin opened with a yawn,
Then moved his middle pawn,
Morgan mirrored his gambit
And envisioned her wider ambit.

Morgan advanced a bold endgame,
A strategy that would write her name
In the annals of sibling sorcery
By plotting a game of debauchery.

King mates Queen,
All is serene,
Queen takes Knight,
All is not right.

Arthur weds Guinevere,
Camelot's woes disappear,
Guinevere seduces Lancelot,
Mordred captures Camelot.

Merlin woke with alarm
On hearing Morgan's charm,
But his move was too late,
The game was up - checkmate!
