We Two Sat

We two sat, more than once,
On an old concrete stair
To nowhere,
In the shade of an elm
That had managed somehow,
In spite of everything,
To grow up through that stair.

Some time has passed,
And only today did I see:
That spirited tree is gone--sawn down
Clean as could be.

I'm a bit of a "tree hugger" this saddened me, but there are lovely memories to cherish.

Some things like that just hurt. Poetry lets us say it so others can know how it feels. I feel it. You wrote it just write (right).

It's all about progress these days. They downed your old friend, and for what? Another tree comes down in a planet that is dying, A fact that too many people choose to ignore. I am sorry for the loss of a good memory. A touching poem.
