The "Ying Tong" Song
Much beloved,
Super happy
Memories of
My two brothers
Singing this to me,
When I was three.
The "Ying Tong,
Yiddlei Po!"
Made me laugh
At every syllable.
It pops up on my screen
And wafts me back,
To a carefree time
When both brothers,
Laughed and lived.
When there were
Adoring parents,
Benignly protecting us
In a dome of love.
All gone now.
Robert died at 19.
The only one
Of five boys
In that wretched car.
Frank rebelled
And smote my parents
A fatal blow.
Hurt by their indifference
He went for broke.
In their subsuming grief
They had forgotten
That he too,
Was bereaved.
He too
Had lost his big bruv.
A part of Mum
Also died,
That cold and foggy
February night.
If only, if only
He had taken
The train
As promised.
