Lifescape

Water flows in soft folds around
The pile hinting dangerously
Of the tidal flow beneath
Afternoon turns to flowered evening
On the bayou herons stand in gentried pose
Possums watch with unfocused eyes
The pirogue moves without
Effort save the rhythmic easy bows
Of the oarsman silhouetted against
A burnt orange sun declining
Over sawgrass alive with insects and birds
Intent on a serendipitous meal before
Nightfall

I echo the praises already given! There's mastery in phrases like "on the bayou herons stand in gentried pose" and magic in "sawgrass alive with insects and birds." Beautifully, enchantingly specific throughout, and with an admirable poetic economy.

What a beautiful description of a sunset in the bayou in a pirogue. You made me want to be there, watching, feeling the tidal flow. Simply beautiful!
