(un)exceptional

somewhere among my high school

class of 853 students

there is someone very much resembling me

she fits the description to a "t"

blending in as one would expect from a shy girl

unexceptional down to her thoughts

in class she listens   to voices in the hallways

to traffic outside   to the drone

of her spanish english math history teachers

across the room corridor gymnasium soccer field

she watches certain girls   longing fiercely

then   story book fashion   she meets a girl   walks

home with her   kisses her as they stand

on her front porch   she comes to live for the time

they are together   between classes   after school   friday nights

saturday nights   long sundays spent at homework

and kissing   and though

she is no less unexceptional   she feels highly   exceptional

this (un) exceptional girl who seems to flow through your life since that time, bringing to life what was inside is all quite exceptional.

I am awed by your choice of the speaker. To write from someone else's perspective, to enter into his/her head and express the feelings—that is what I would like to do soon in my poetry.
