when the last plane is grounded

the last train shedded

the last auto and truck parked

the last office door locked

the last theater and restaurant shuttered

when the earth stands still

all that will be left is each other

then we will learn what we have wondered

are we good or are we not

are we generous or are we not

are we a species worth saving or are we not

are we salvageable
