Numbers

Each day is a statistician's paradise,
A day of reckoning in five figures,
A gasping series of graphs,
Bar charts in pretty colours,
Simple lines of ups and downs,
The anonymous arithmetic of
Life and death.

And the numbers that count?

We are told to keep

Two metres apart,

Or an imperial six feet,

(You know, the depth of
A first time grave.)

One the distance between the living,
One the distance between the living
And the dead.
