In 1956 i was a school prefect and school athletics champion
A CSM in the cadet force and in love with a girl from the local high school this is their story. Read it slowly and enjoy a repost

Victor Ludorum 56 by M.A.Meddings

At Seventeen you could see her promise
A burgeoning beauty with freckles
A certain shyness that defined her
Even then as a lady

A demurely pretty girl
Like an ephemeral butterfly awaiting release
And I
An awkward schoolboy
Hero of the upper Fifth
Victor Ludorum Fifty Six
With no idea of girls
Or what
These strange, tortured dreams foretold

Urgings of manhood!
Daydream interludes and irregular verbs clashed
To imminent failure at 'mock'
Split infinitives defined
By split tennis dresses
And white frilled knickers
The endless; ominous; butt of the jokes
Of lower school 'preppies'
Each chancing their arm, with my potent state of mind
At their charge

'Here comes Jennifer Freckles' they sing
All to the struggling embarrassment of me
'Here comes Jennifer's soldier boy'
Her school friends say
Pubescent girls
Waiting for love in Wednesday cafe's
At afternoon tea

Wednesday was always that reserved
Combined cadet force and she
Brief spite release
From 'Blue coat' rudimentary
Café Gugliano's at three

The heart stopping wait for her to show
The endlessly practised, yet failed 'hello'
As she swings through the door tip tilting her nose
And the light from the window defining her pose
The blushed secret smile as we meet in the aisle
The blood pumping urge of this wish she were mine
A missed opportune to call her by name
Despite all the teasing each Wednesday's the same

'Jennifer's soldier'
A crown on his arm
CSM ranking,
No skill to disarm
This redheaded beauty that has captured me

The soft pretty freckles
The song of her voice
Leaving me speechless and desperately shy
'She really does like you' her best friends say
Then a smooth haired 'Lothario'
Stole her away
From under my nose
Whilst I
Stuttered and stayed
In school boy silence
Lost and afraid
Of this oppressive 'class divide'

Victor Ludorum
With no place to hide
This first broken heart

I enjoyed the story of memories past written with such style. So many pictures you left with me because of the vivid imagery.
I love the intermingling of school needs and your needs: "Urgings of manhood!
Daydream interludes and irregular verbs clashed
To imminent failure at 'mock'
Split infinitives defined
By split tennis dresses"

Yes, it must have been a difficult task to keep you mind on school work when you had such a lovely young Jennifer filling both you heart and mind. But, how sad, for this is your "First Broken Heart."

Our first loves remain with us forever, helping to mold us into who we are. And, you, my friend are... lastromantichero!

A welcome repost, hero! And how not to feel tenderness for that boy with no place to hide his first broken heart? I felt it, indeed, even more now that when i read it before.
