cold mountain

han shan

alone   always seeking

to what end

the bliss of companionship

is our great gift

what gift

does aloneness bring   why seek wisdom

in solitude   then write of it

on rocks

for the ages   are you that sure

of your words

is that not the conceit

of vanity

It could have been vanity. It also might have been a desperate effort to attain significance.

I liked all of it, of course, but this:

"... why
seek

wisdom in solitude then write of it
on rocks

for the ages..." - really captures me. I'll be thinking about it for a long while as I consider the possible answers. Really enjoyed this poem, thanks.
