Viral vocabulary

The ivory towers of Oxford
loom large in our lives today,
dons and boffins across the board
have earned their piper-pay,
the wordsmiths of the OED
have noted many trendy terms
that reflect the grim glossary
of our new life with germs,
so welcome the 'lockdown',
the 'super-spreader' too,
they'll be the talk of the town
in our 'bubbles' during 'curfew'.

But listen, the scientists of Oxford
have also found their voices,
a new covid drug has come on board
to extend our vaccine choices;
the sprint has overtaken the marathon,
the war of words swings in our favour,
there is a shining star to wish upon,
and a real prospect for us to savour,
that soon we hear in simple code:
covid-19 has at last been 'furloughed'!
