St Ivan's day by Ann Wood
We continue with the bright holidays today, on January 7, the day when the Orthodox Christian Church honors the memory of St. John the Baptist - the last Old Testament prophet and baptizer of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River.John the Baptist is also called the "Forerunner" because he walked before Christ and prepared people for his birth. According to the Gospels, he became famous as a preacher in Judea and Galilee. John the Baptist was captured and beheaded by order of Herod Antipas.
The holiday is called St. John's Day by the people. The ritual bathing for health from Jordan's Day continues on St. Ivan's Day. It is a holiday of brotherhood and brotherhood. Folk customs dictate that the best man or brother-in-law should "bathe" by publicly spraying the newlyweds with water a year ago. The young family must welcome their guests and bring wine, cow and meat to the godfather. On this day, the bachelors bathe the girls, the young men and the namesakes bathe.
The Bulgarian folk tradition connects the rites and customs of St. Ivan's Day with the purifying power of the water consecrated the day before. The period of the so-called "Dirty days" are over and everyone is looking ahead to the predictions of good health, prosperity and a happy life.
The ritual table on St. Ivan's Day includes boiled wheat, beans, oshav, banitsa, blood sausage, roasted sausage, pork ribs with cabbage.
On St. Ivan's Day, the term during which the New Year's masked companies go expires. In some parts of the country, carolers solemnly take the king to the fountain and bathe him. He then arranged a feast, which was attended by men disguised as bears, brides and Arabs. Finally, everyone goes to a festive dance, which ends the full cycle of the Christmas custom.
Congratulations to the all people who are have name day today and Merry Christmas.
I wholeheartedly wish all of you to be healthy and blessed, St. John the Baptist to keep and protect you, to have abundant wisdom, audacity and faith in your life and to achieve everything you dream of!
Cheers and happy holiday!
