The Prettiest Boy In School

Liver cirrhosis,
chronic and acute.
The prettiest,
shyest boy in high school
died yesterday.

He said to me
" I was drinking every day.
For years.
I think I got in
with the wrong crowd."

I thought,
but did not say,
I was there.
You could have been
in love with me.

One feels this poem in the gut, like a knot or a punch. You bring us the reality skillfully and unsparingly.
