In memory of Raymond Chandler.

The Long Goodbye

I'm following my shadow, staying in the shadows,
Keeping my distance from the suspect, the bad guy,
I'm trying to look normal, upturned collar and downturned cig,
Looking down at gushing gutters, up to sizzling stars,
A member of the public hired me, a private eye.
To pry and pry and pry, the focus of a private eye.

And who am I stalking, who is looking back?

You may know him as Joe Black,

Now I'm finished, job done.

I am the object of my subject,
Time for my big sleep,
Farewell my lovely.

A very nice, very clever tribute. These are sometimes really difficult to pull off—but you capture Chandler’s spirit well in the poem.
