the color of the sky

as samuel preaches zoey gives thanks

thanks for amos and hattie's health

for the little ones' vigor   for the sheep

that safely graze   for the community

for the experiment that is the community

for their inalienable rights   she gives thanks

as samuel preaches   but when she steps

from the church into the air she gives thanks

for the color of the sky which she never

truly saw until she came to this new land

never saw because stoop-labor bent her back

work was all there was and all there ever would be

rows without end   never a moment to look up

now there is   now she does   hallelujah
