amos is a civil war veteran, former slave

echoes

samuel preaches

new testament on sundays

amos listens

but when alone   smoke from his pipe

drifting skyward

to mingle with passing clouds

sheep safely grazing the meadow below

air clear and chill

he prefers old testament

hears the ring of truth

his truth

can relate to moses in a way he cannot to jesus

jesus was many things

he was not a slave

then there are the psalms

and the song of songs to still the echoes

of muskets and moans

I love the sly allusion here “Sheep may safely graze” (a Bach cantata, correct?), and of course the very name of it. Of course Amos would prefer the old testament. It provides a very clever sort of humor to a very fine poem. Thank you.
