tri-state drives

That time in Cincinnati
cicadas in the summer breeze
mem’ries for the winter freeze
across the river on gentle
flowing Indiana slopes
tubing passed fervent hopes
a smile was all there was
between the great big sky
and the open road to Kentucky
terminating breathe in Tennessee
there’s always more in the distance
across a ribboned asphalt sea
