a love poem, hopelessly obscure, but a love poem nonetheless
Toby Falls in Love
“In love! —said the corporal—your honor
was very well the day before yesterday . . ."
—Laurence Stern, Tristram Shandy
-
Love? Yes, love.
It comes
when manning the battlements.
In the thick of the siege itself (recreated)
Mrs Wadman’s worries
are justified,
but perhaps overwrought.
Bridget
will ply Trim and “get it all out of him."
Plans are drawn.
Wardrobe fitting the occasion ordered.
Thundercats are go.
Hilarion’s Asse aside, or astride, as the case may be,
the advance is made, Toby, like a lamb to slaughter, goes.
