What do families become and what the narrator longs for.
Families are scary ,
Places ,
Stinging with unsaid words,
untold stories,
dark secrets.
Don't turn left ,
there's big one there,
will make you bleed,
may even poison.
rings in my head, a dead grandma's voice.
l retreat .
Not asking,
not curious.
A tree,
growing, blooming , shedding ,
with a precision
every season,
without question.
In my silent acquiescence
I become a part, a page in my family history ,
for future reference.
I wish families were festivals ,
of lights.
Not knots,
of secrets held tight.
I wish they were poems,
Of love and joy ,
Not tales of tears,
and sacrifice.
I wish they were cillections of love ballads and romance!
Not memos of propriety ,protocol
advance warnings , laments.
I wish families were places,
of rest , rejuvenation , warm and shaded .
Not terrains rife ,
with shady secrets,
punishing insectbites.
I wish they were parks,
with swings ,
With merry sounds ,
of gurgling children .
Not serpentine
rollercoasters,
with screaming
ones on!
I wish families were rom coms,
Not eerie mysteries,
or horror stories.
I wish families were open books,
with easy access,
Not sacred texts, forbidden ,
Forbidding
Foreshadowing death.
I wish families were sweatmeats,
Without calories ,
or bitter aftertaste!
I wish families had no secrets, unsaid words
I wish families
said words,
of endearment.
