Today the air is fresh and clean once more. No longer carrying the smoke of countless Canadian Forest fires. I'm no longer housebound due to a severe lung condition. And so I celebrate ...

Topmasts Swaying Against The Sky

Were I to characterize the way I feel

This crystal day of sun and wind

I'd say I lived as small boys do

In disregard of tomorrow's kind

to run and jump because I can

To laugh and soar and understand

That limits are for other folks

Restraints for other wunderkind

Who choose rules above imagined things

And in so doing lose their way

To topmasts swaying against the sky

Above billowed sails and diamond spray

Of cobalt blue and crystal spume

Of  spindrift Sargasso sea and all

Of raging gales and winter tales

Safe harbour then in quiet nightfall

I love the optimism of this piece and the calming final line, I feel your escapism of the smoke.

A fine poem, Joe, written as only a man of the sea could write it. Also, I, too, am happy to be reading your work again.
