Goodness Never Stands a Chance
There's nothing to be gained from being good,
From urging others to try to be good. Jesus
Is dead. They cheered as he died. Mohandas
Is dead, and also Martin, shot in broad daylight
By men who weren't good, and all those who
Promised to follow them didn't. They turned
And went back to their miserable ways. The union
Of soviets, fashioned by Lenin, turned harshly
Oppressive so soon as he died. The church took
Up torture in honor of Jesus. Calls for more
Generous health care and wages are met with
Suspicion by racists who'd rather have nothing
Than see others share what they want. The masses
Aren't good. They can't be made so, and that's why
Things always are bad.
