A Better Life Beckons
I'm of the opinion that those who live in Palermo
Have much better lives than mine. They're drinking
Espresso outside in the sun, and combing
The markets for good things to eat, vegetables,
Cheeses and fish from the sea. They're making
Their ways past magnificent ruins, and, surely,
Because they're Sicilian-Italian, they're talking
And talking to neighbors and friends, while I sit
By myself in a house on the prairie, drinking weak
Coffee, and dreading the drive past great tracts
Of bland houses to some grocery store which will
Offer me odorless, prepackaged foods. Affluence,
By itself, doesn't bring pleasure. Life in Nebraska
Is tragically dull, which is why I'm convinced I
Should move to Palermo to gather some pleasure
For mine.
