During the blessed
month of Ramadan, Islam decreesfor worldwide believers to fast
from sun up to sun down, for one lunar
month. They abstain from food, drink,
sex, evil actions and thoughts. The bedridden,
the travellers, children below seven,
the lunatics, the aged, women during
pregnancy, or menstruation period
or forty days
post child birth ,are exempted but
women can make for it afterwards.
Besides health benefits, fasting
trains one to eat to one's hunger
and not to one's appetite and one who could bear
hunger, could easily bear anger, stress,
disappointment, and more so hunger
ordeal during war, earthquake, flood,
bad harvest or drought. 1.5 billion meal
is saved daily for one month and
redistributed to the hunger-starved
around the globe to restore
food supply imbalance. 'Zakaat'[ donation]
2% or so, of one's wealth saved
beyond basic needs, are re-shared
with the have-nots, to check idle capitals,
usury, interest and ultra capitalism. Many
devotees observe Intekaaf' seclusion, during
the Ramadan last ten days and keep vigil to
experience 'lay-la-tul Quadr' among these
nights-the special unknown night
on which Koran was first revealed. Extra
night prayers 'Tarawee' too are
performed.

Ramadan is the 9th month of lunar based Islamic calendar. It means extreme heat
or dryness. It symbolises the burning of sins through fasting and prayer and benevolent deeds.
It's a month of self restraint and self reflection on body mind and the spirit.
At present world wide the muslim world observe fasting.
