For Knowing What's Been Lost
We'll all learn together, won't we? Sadly, we will shake our heads
And say, "So, this is how the Germans lived between the world wars."
The ones who once would proudly preen and prance behave more
Circumspectly now. The planet's advocates, and those intent on
Equity, the ones appalled at wanton slaughter, facing threats, no
Longer speak, while those who dully do their jobs, who always
Disapproved of criticism of their orthodoxy, nod assent. They
Are not inconvenieced by restrictions on some liberties which
Never meant too much to them. Yes, we're living nearly as
The Germans did between the wars. Our states diverge in
But one way: the Germans had no memories of stable lives
Without oppression. we may suffer more for having them.
