A challenge to all poetbay members
The challenge is based around the traditional form of haiku in Japanese culture whereby the writing of haiku were often used to play a house party game
In those games party guests sat in a circle and the game began by the host wwritng a Haiku on a sheet of paper the next person in the circle wrote an answer known as the Renga
quite a simple concept except that the answer in Renga form had to compliment the previous Haiku or subtly move it on so that the next person in the circle could write a haiku that advanced the game
It often was the case that upwards of a hundred stanzas could be written in this way.
For those not familiar with haiku/ renga rules
The haiku is a stanza of three lines and uses syllable count viz:
1st line five syllables
2nd 7 syllabbles
3rd 5 syllables
The renga or answer
two lines of 7 syllables each
the eventual combining of the two forms of course was the origin of the Tanka
In their traditional form of course the Haiku/renga were used to express
the following
Emotions, seasons, weather, nature
later on western culture adopted the form and added human frailties, love, friendship strife etc
if you are interested in this please some one write a renga answer to
my haiku start posted seperately see how we get along
it could be fun
