Like a Hole in the Head

I need this war,
Like a hole in the
Head.

Now you tell me
You're dying too.

I can see the world,
In black,
Painted with hate.

The crushing pain,
That's
Impossible,
To escape,
Like a dentist's
Drill.

Why must we
Never learn?

A dentist's drill makes a hole in the head: great symbolic integration! The drilling is painful, but better--sooner or later, one hopes--than the alternative (dental decay). Can this war, or war in general, be like that? The ultimately therapeutic nature of the painful hole drilled in the head, reinforced subtly by "must" in the penultimate line, make this a complex and brilliant anti-war poem. Superb!

I think it's in our nature to go to war, like two tribes fighting over dead fish
