sometimes even we can't understand why we want what we do

Muse

"The desires of the heart are as crooked as corkscrews"- W.H. Auden

We lay side by side
In your double bed
Off which you removed
Garments, clutter, awkwardly
Like you were clearing a space
previously invisible.
Your room the first after
the key unlocked the door.
The master bedroom, easy access late
Whilst others slumbered upstairs.
You said there was no choice in the matter
with a tone of disdain,
like you hadn't accidentally won jackpot.

Midnight hit when we entered
the double-storey dream,
Conversation pulsing into the hours
following, creeping to the light
Which sleep forced us to elude.
And in clothes unchanged
we drifted into lands removed,
dreaming thoughts forbidden
Articulating words I'll never say
over and over silently.
You asked me which side I would prefer
But as my gaze lingers on what I am unable to touch
I would like to be on your side,
Holding you close to me
