confusion about a common term of speech resulted in much laughter

Duck of the Year

Bobbing heads,
And verdure tail feather
Creeping from underneath,
Egg-beater kick in the murky depths
Hiding legs beneath the sheath

That's a goose, not a gander I say,
Want to come and take a look?
There's distinct difference,
Marked contrast,
As in lira, deutchmarks, pence

Get down, I say!
Get down at once!
Off the dusty floor
Or was that the balcony in the sky
With the aeroplanes screeching for more

Your mistake amuses,
The quiet chuckle surfacing
Concealed by hidden frowns,
Pack away the fresh-peeled hope
And send in all the clowns

Dodge and twist,
Bend and snap,
Get the monkey off your back
Why should the poppies be sliced with the scythe
When we're walking the beaten track?

Saga
You can change a meaning in your head just as fast as you can put it on a table. And yet, just this minute piece of confusion can create such ignorance and chaos in all of us. You describe this so welll!!!
