A lost friend

Some time ago I lost a friend,
The oldest one I had.
He slipped away without a word
And left me worn and sad.

I never thought I'd miss him so
But since he went his way
The sun is dimmed, the days grow chill
And slowly fade to grey.

My friend is gone for ever more,
That much, by now, I know.
Yet every night I ask myself:
Oh, Youth, where did you go?
