Only a matter of time

It surprises me
every time

I try to tell myself
the obvious,
the things I see
but
I don't truly believe it

I am waiting
for you to run
I am waiting
for you to
quit

You might come back,
they always do,
but I don't
expect you
to always stay by my side

They never do,
at some point
they leave

Some people,
however,
seem to linger

I don't really know why
and it is
just a matter of time
(that is the truth
that
beats through my heart)
they will fall behind
or run past me
