i was looking at a photograph of a group in uniform, and it came to me that within this one unified collective exists individuals constrained by their very identity
"We construct a narrative for ourselves, and that's the thread that we follow from one day to the next. People who disintegrate as personalities are the ones who lose that thread"- Paul Auster
Labels are flying in the air
As though tossed by jugglers
with emotion painted onto their faces
Instead of the fear working its way to the surface
Lips mouth stereotypes
That no-one bothers to refute
Ears prick up with recognition
Yet no conflicting attitudes arise.
Interest in the aspirations of our peers
Is feigned with the precision of a surgeon,
Breaking through the top layers
yet careful not to damage the delicate beneath.
Before we can protest,
Before we even wake up to it
we are found immured,
In boxes on the dock for shipping
With our destinies plastered
in the space where 'fragile' used to be.
Which way up?
Does it really matter?
We're all rolling on our heads anyway.
We reach our destinations
Like they were written in the stars
since ink was rolled through a pen nib,
And the fourth wall is removed.
The light pierces our eyes,
Brighter than what we have
previously been exposed to,
Full of beauty, chance, hope
Leading to worlds
we have long thought about
Yet some are to weary to enter,
Others having seen more than their share.
Shells of those we used to know
float by us with no trace
Of commonalities former,
Bonds forged from dirt with bare hands.
Distant diamonds in our eyes
Glisten like Lucy's
And though the chains are no longer visible
They are cast on eternally
For individuality demands a fortune.
