By 'softly' I think the Bible meant with wisdom and love. That's what I mean in my poem,too - message to all parents and teachers, leaders and coaches of any kind.

Lead Softly

When Jacob left for home with children, livestock great,
He gave his solemn word that they had naaught to dread.
"Softly, I'll lead on: for livestock, children, wait
For what they can endure as we move on ahead!"

Remembering years gone by, he had that journey made
Long, lonely days there spent in wilderness alone;
Yet learning how to live, was tried each day he stayed
Found solace in a dream that he was not alone.

Since he had trod before that very selfsame route
He'd learned compassion, patience and what death was all about.

Let us now not forget as we begin our year
to lead the children softly so they have naught to fear.
