I wrote this just before the Millennium. A robin flew into our windscreen on my way to work.....it was just awful, the poem describes the situation exactly.
The reference to Oscar Wilde and his little swallow can be read about in his short story, "T

Sympathy

A little robin, dead and gone.
The world is much poorer for the loss of just one.
You are the bird that we love best,
with twinkling eye and scarlet breast.

Just before the Millennium's dawn,
we lost a robin and the world should mourn.
But celebrations will be all a-glitter...
I'd prefer to listen to your clear, sharp twitter.

The Spring will come, bringing days more long.
Empty, without your jewelled song.
You were small and quick, and friendly too,
we never meant to do this to you.

That cold winter morning in early December,
is one me and Andy will always remember.
Driving to work, just another day,
you hit the windscreen,
what can we say?

Just a short distance from shore and sand,
you lay all a-quiver in my hand.
I stood and held you, almost cried,
then without a sound, you simply died.

Sorry seems such an empty word,
but you died quite quick, without much hurt.
I bet you were looking for something to eat.
A little bird needs food, to give him heat.

I hope Oscar Wilde had the right idea,
if he did I won't grieve, or have any fear.
I think of you when I've seen robins since,
I believe you're in Heaven with The Happy Prince.

God sent his angels for you to follow,
I hope you are singing with that little swallow.
