This Poem is dedicated to the memory of My life long fishing companion John Alf Perry who died in March 2002 of a rare skin condition Known as Fourniers Gangrene. There is only a 5% mortality rate from the disease John was an unlucky victim.

Dear John This One Is Just For You by M.A.Meddings

The photograph is a picture of the 'Wine cellar' where we hung bottles of wine in the stream to keep them cool.

My friend John Alfred Perry with whom I fished  on the River Kennet in Berkshire every Sunday for nearly 30 years died Four years ago this week.
I fished just one season after he had gone, then resigned my Rod at Hungerford. Since then I haven't fished for trout much at all and  for the first time since he died I have taken a Rod again.

I was wondering John
How's the fishin been up there
Just where you are
Its a bit too far for me to come right now
So I took another rod on the kennet this year
The first time I've had no fear
The very first year since you went away

Just couldnt face the day
Fishin without you until now
Your ghost walked behind me
The whole of the season that you left
And I couldnt shake him off
Now matter how I tried
I just couldnt hide

And that big old Grayling just a way on up
Past the black hut
Do remember him ?
You lost him a couple of times season before last
Well he gave me of his best on the very last cast
The Season after you died
John I just sat down
And cried for  those happy times

Then you know right in the corner
Over  the bracket hatch bridge
The  'brownie' I lost that  evening at the end of August
Well hes  now twice as big and a shoulder like a wrestler
I  hooked  him just  once more after you'd gone
But the leader broke down at the butt
Just as you  always said it would John

Then the mayfly last season  well it never really came
A few duns at Whitsuntide lasted till June
Not a minute too soon for me
No stomach to fish dont you see
And the wine cellar where we cooled all the claret
It's empty now  there is  nothing left for me
Except your distant memory
And those  happy times we shared
Nothing is spared
God bless you John this one is just for you.

Very, very beautiful.

Do note that you want "too" of course in line 3 of the final stanza. :-,?

I never cry... for if I did, I would drown in tears for reasons such as you have penned. Your poem has reached across cyberspace and touched me in happy and sad ways, both combining. This is surely one of the most beautiful poems I have ever read! Your loving heart knows such kind ways.

Michael this is a beautifully touching tribute to your dear friend. Friendships like this one you shared with John should be remembered and honored. And, you have done so with such a sincere heart-felt text. xxxxyb
