status quo
she came home today
a little late, you might say
post-schoolday work
with that library jerk
why care, you say, anyway
at dinner we discussed
our burning hearts, our flaming lust
i tried to say
in my own way
that mine's come down with rust
i know it's silly now
never to stop wonder how
much of this
really is
convenience, not love
so daytime turned to night
i waited for a raging fight
my fear disguised
i was surprised
when she turned out the lights
and now to make amends
is what i truly do intend
'cause she told me
that jerk, you see
is nothing but a friend
the next day i arranged
a late arrival and deranged
her winning hand
and as i'd planned
the status quo has changed
