(1) Adnan and Qahtan: Names of Arab ancestors.
(2) Conscription: Cutting off ears and tongues are methods of punishment used by Saddam's regime against those who refused conscription and other opponents.
(3) Choir: Rhyme and rhythm of this stanza are based on an Arabic children's song
called "Oh Hajj Mohamed".
(4) Fez: It means in Arabic: to win – to succeed.
(5) Jose: Jose Marte.
(6) Pablo: Pablo Neruda.
(7) Che: Che Guevara.
(8) Chavez: Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez.
(9) Nasr: First part of Hassan Nasrulla's surname, which also means victory.
(10) Hussein: Grandson of Mohammad. Martyred in the Battle of Karbala in 680.
He is highly respected and inspiring Imam for Shi'a Muslims.
(11) Salah: Salahuddin Ayyubi.
(12) Patrice: Patrice Lumumba.
(13) Ho: Ho Chi Minh.
(14) El Shafia: El Shafia Ahmed El Sheikh, a Sudanese communist and trade union
leader, Martyred in the early seventieth of last century.
(15) Gassan: Gassan Kanafani, a Palestinian novelist, poet, author and freedom fighter, Martyred in Beirut by the Israelis in the early seventieth of last century.
