Sleeping Awake

If you should find yourself awake
In the night, as I so often do,
Remember me, for I too am alone.
And aching for a voice, a touch, a breath.

While we huddle each in our corner,
Wondering why we can’t sleep,
Denying our emptiness out of pride,
But finding little peace.

And facing another tired tomorrow,
Grateful for at least the light.
Another like the last with many more
Just like the present still to come.

Reach out and I will answer,
A word and I’ll be there,
And we can close our eyes
Contented and in peace once again.

Or meanwhile we can talk and share
Until we rest our restless sleep again.
