The scales of honesty

Come time to balance of all you got
Those things tangible or not
Be sure the scales are weighted true
Or honesty shall elude you
And as you weigh those things unknown
or that be known to you alone
Tip not the scales to favour good
As some I'm sure would if they could

Know as you weigh all that be sad
Forget you not what made you glad
And in the weighing of all things
Include the tune the songbird sings
And as the prickly thorn you add
In weight of that which made you sad
Before the reckoning you close
Know that the thorn protects the rose

And if you feel your scale lacks wealth
Be not you rich indeed in health
And if your lot be to complain
What weight your debit so much shame
For love and friendship you once knew
Far outweigh baubles you accrue
And for the scales of life to balance free
You must to good or bad add honesty.
Brendan.
