This is a response to a request from Kathy Lockhart as she found him quite fascinating when portrayed by Johnny Depp. He was also decorated for his bravery at the Battle of Vagen in 1665 and is most famous for his bawdy verse and satirical works though

Ode To The 2nd Earl Of Rochester.

They said he was a Libertine
John Wilmot was his name
No sex was safe or in between
He had no sense of shame

The second Earl as he was known
For King Charles an eager friend
His wit he wrote about the throne
As was the courtly trend

Actor, Poet, Gadavant
His life was full of tricks
He wrote of dildos stuffed in pants
And various other pricks

One day he overstepped the mark
To make King Charles a fool
Which really wasn't very smart
As Charles could be quite crue

And so he fled the city life
Gave up the Merry Gang
To settle with a country wife
He had no wish to hang

He changed his name to Bendo
And as a doctor plied his trade
But he couldn't change his ego
And chased after pretty maids

A hectic life you must agree
Most spent in sexual bliss
At the ripe old age of thirty three
He died of syphilis

I plead ignorance of this man, but your excellent piece must surely send me a'Googlin' tomorrow to learn more. It's truly difficult to do justice to historical pieces, but this one does.

I've dabbled in this genre myself. Please take some time to read " Burghers of Calais" and "Millions for Defense".

Thank you so much Graham. This is so perfect! I didn't know he was decorated for bravery that wasn't in the film. You have added more of a decency to this man and of course I like to find some redeeming character trait in anyone portrayed by Johnny Depp. ; ) Thanks again. Kathy : )))
