Old age...

Pain and Fear

Alone
And old.
Alone,
With pain.
Alone
With fear.

Precious
Human contact,
The only lifeline.
Necessary
As breath.

The gentle touch
Of a passing
Neighbour,
The jolly banter
Of the milkman,
The caring librarian
Saving her favourite
Author for her,
The little girl
Smiling a wave,
Fills the fragile,
Old lady's heart
With so much
Warmth,

And for a moment,

She forgets
Her pain.

Caoimhe Murphy
i love this, it reminds me of my grandmother.
she was left broken-hearted when my grandfather passed away in 1998 and she's never quite been herself since then.
thanks for this,

Hi Esti, I am so touched, your poem brought tears to my eyes. Someone close to my heart is going through this feeling, with cancer. I want you to know that I am there for you. Love, Neelima

The repetition of "alone" really works; touching and eloquent!
