His parents split up and my grandson Terry leaves to live out of state with his mother only.
Just under my chin,
Warm baby-breath on my chest
Soft arms around my neck,
And I thought I would never be able to
Let you go when you awoke.
Thought, oh, I'll miss you so.
Prayed, God, keep him safe.
Cried, just a little,
So as not to wake you.
Then your Mama came to get you,
Her father took your car seat to his car,
Your Daddy carried you out, holding so tight.
Then he strapped you in and kissed your nose.
We watched the car carry you away.
Your Daddy still clutched your little red sandals
That held your baby footprints.

Terry Goes Away
That last day you fell asleep, your little headJust under my chin,
Warm baby-breath on my chest
Soft arms around my neck,
And I thought I would never be able to
Let you go when you awoke.
Thought, oh, I'll miss you so.
Prayed, God, keep him safe.
Cried, just a little,
So as not to wake you.
Then your Mama came to get you,
Her father took your car seat to his car,
Your Daddy carried you out, holding so tight.
Then he strapped you in and kissed your nose.
We watched the car carry you away.
Your Daddy still clutched your little red sandals
That held your baby footprints.
