Tangled Web

And 'neath a shimmering silver moon
I walked away from love too soon
To play another faithless tune
For I was lost in me

I told my love I truly cared
And she her love to me declared
And I just looked and at her stared
I needed to be free

She cried forever and a day
Her love now gone so far away
Her tearful eyes still do me flay
And I am filled with shame

For I caroused and played with trust
Such promises to sate my lust
No man I know was so unjust
Their love for me their blame

My love for girls a fleeting song
A smile, a kiss, goodbye I'm gone
I never felt this time I'm wrong
Their love for me my due

Then I met a girl and loved her so
I told her I shall never go
My heart of stone now melted snow
My love a love so true

Her face, her grace, her wit, her guile
Outrageous laugh, heartbreaking smile
A man would walk for many a mile
To gaze such beauty rare

I fell like stone in chasm deep
I could not eat I could not sleep
Her beauty would make strong men weep
A goddess ere so fair

The carefree knave would settle down
To abdicate his lovers crown
No more to jest to play the clown
In splendid naivety

For life is strange with twisted trails
A bed of roses soon to nails
What goes round comes round never fails
Too soon coquetry

I went to see her late one night
And saw her clear in candlelight
Another's kiss was her delight
And I love lost now cried

And now I lay awake in dreams
No more no tangled web of schemes
My thoughts now clear what true love means
And lesson now applied.
Brendan.
