A Promise

this noise
quiet at first, then heats up at the right time
It feels like broken glass, but I need it
I have to have it, or else I'll fall into hardening cement
it is my desire, I can hear the monologue now
the voice saying "take my hand boy!"
"there is another side to this world than a tiny ember dying amidst the black!"
It has been my fuel to move on, to stay in the game
that promise to a frowning face, giving it a small smile for the small hope
it has made my past clean, and my future sunny
Life is a beach, you burn your feet on the sand before you hit the water
The ring of the chimes, the call of the dove
a sign to know that peace is with me and the right has been achieved
the last person to ever break a promise to is yourself

My initial response was, 'this could be a metaphor for the act of taking drugs.' But then somewhere between L8-L11 it seems to transition somewhat. And finally summing up in a twist in the last three lines.

I feel unsure, but I think this could be a conversion experience.
Particularly when you speak of the Dove and peace. It certainly caused me to think and ponder all possibilities. But I kept coming back to a Christian experience of new birth.
