Hurricane Katrina
gathered like cloth
the people were bunched and soaked
we watched on TV and were slightly baffled
we all watched
questions turned to outrage
and the world watched the greatest nation on Earth
the world was appalled
that place is a dried up creek
turned to swamp
and all the high land is taken
we have all been slowly wearing down the myths
fanned by high-grounders
that it is a strong river
clean and healthy
but the myth is nearly gone
nearly – some people don't like being wrong
the people I saw in the waters
in the stadium
bunched like used tissues
were already drowning
long before the storm
