inspired by everything the world has given me so far

Another Moment

if you wake one day
and realise
that you never want to waste
another moment
then that moment
has already not been wasted

if you suddenly decide
to cultivate each thought
so it will define beauty
in anything it wants to
then even the moments
you thought wasted
are not lost

even the pain of desire
blesses you with life

even in the feelings of loss
you have gained

even in the introspection
those thoughts have a choice

if you wake one day
and realise this
you will never want to waste
another moment

I'm reading Muriel Spark's novel Memento Mori, and this poem reminds me of the central idea of that book: that the clock is ticking and that each moment is precious. I suppose the problem is to define what "wasting moments" means to each of us. I love your insightful poem and may we all learn to seize the day.

we should definitely not squander our time - things hurt but there is so much beauty yet to realise and discover :-)
