A year ago my mother and I freed our little yellow budgie, Topaz. Today, she has made herself a home under the eaves of the church next door, and we see her every so often flying to and fro.
on the wing
never falter
never fall
resplendent
in your
topaz shirt
jade green skirt
black crescents
on your wings
fly away
far away
home to your nest
watch candles dim
hear angel's hymns
and the calling
of your children
watch them live
to learn and see
the world
and all its
company
forget the cage
that bleak, dark age
and may the rest
of your life
be
free
