Heart's Memory
You wonder sometimesWhen you see that old house
Behind a crooked white fence
Lilac walls hunched in sadness
Because you think
You've been there
Sometime somewhere
Though it's been empty since before you were born.
You wonder sometimes
When you look at the trellis
And expect to see flowers
Where now there are none
Because you know
You've seen them
Where now the skeletal frame beckons
Morning glories opened their faces to the sun
You wonder sometimes
When your eyes slide to the door
Mahogany wood and brass
With a patch in the centre
Because you feel
Something's missing
There was a knocker there
A friendly old lion who guarded a home
You look every time
You pass that old house
With its broken glass windows
And faded white trim
Because you remember
Bits and pieces
Of a life and a love
And a dog who slept on your feet
But you shake your head
And go on with your life
The only life you know
Ignore the ghostly yearning in your chest
For something your mind doesn't remember
But your heart does
And it cries
a little more
each time
