The Stars now Gone.

In the past, the stars were a reminder.
Of the light coming from the distance,
despite the current darkness.
Relief was on the way from this pain.

Yet in the present, the stars are gone.
Their guiding light gone,
All I can do is sit and cry
and drown myself in self-pity.

Reminds me of a line from Robinson Jeffers' poem "Tragedy Has Obligations": "A choice comes to each man when his days darken: To be tragic or to be pitiful." When one is young, those do seem the only choices. I've lived long enough to know they're not.
