The Brave, Bold Boys
The brave, bold boyswent bouncing off to battle
as their fathers
and their fathers
and their fathers went before
To fight for folk and freedom
with their blazoned banners blowing
those bold, brave boys
went marching off to war
The bold, bold boys
sang of honor, truth and glory
marching onward
ever onward
with their lusty battle cries
While their mothers and their daughters
and their sons and friends and lovers
cheered and hollered
and paraded
and went home and wiped their eyes
The brave, brave boys
marched upon the field of battle;
with their cannons
and their rifles
soon they filled the air with lead
They fought with might and passion
but the battle kept on raging
bombs exploding
day and night
until the last young boy was dead.
______
Now the field is full of flowers
and the families have forgotten
how they hollered and paraded
when their boys ran off to die
But the meadow still remembers
how the wounded lay upon it
and the wistful wind still
sighs and whispers
sighs and whispers
'why?'
