Inspired by a conversation I recently had with a friend struggling with mental illness

Striving for normality

He looks down as his strength breaks, his mind taking over and his will fades. He grabs my hand and holds on, tells me he can't take it much more.. is tired, that life would turn out the same even if he did let it win.

All the things that I'm supposed to say fade from my mind, and all that's left are the things that I know, that I have seen myself.

"None of us are normal, don't strive for that"

I lift his chin, attempt to catch his wandering, sad gaze.

"Stick to what is important to you and don't ever let it get in your way"

I hope my words reach him, and manage to make a difference, or even be made sense of, as he gazes at something beside me, nodding intently, listening to the woman I know only he can see and hear.

I have been on both sides and can say with certainty that what you said is less important than that you reached out and touched him.
